Mission Statement
Hi readers,
The purpose of this blog is to find moments of family-hood in art created in rap, poetry, documentaries other visual art. I will primarily be focusing on art that focuses on familyhood and people getting together for a specific cause for their community. Some artists that I will be focusing on will be J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyonce. Some visual aid that I will be using will range from Black is King, Lemonade, fast and furious, and other documentaries. I will be using a range of sources such as the New York Times, Netflix, amazon prime video, and Disney plus as a place to find content, and if I find a point where I can’t find more information, I will explore to other sources like The Atlantic and Wired. I will be exploring other forms of art such as poems and social media videos that people post because both media show some sort of intent to spread a message to the public to see. This blog will create a platform for people to share ideas and to expand upon my finds from the art that I will be exploring. I expect my blog to find similar themes of togetherness, equality, and family hood, and all three themes correspond to the issue today. The issue of people still not being treated equally currently, because of other’s races, or gender. Many of these artists promoted these issues to be solved in the past but found little to no progress in their goal. Today, many black people all over the world, including Americans, are being treated equally and many of them have died from this power difference. Many people are looking in the past and noticing all of these artists pushing for change and nothing happened. So now people are making sure this current string of “incidents” will not go unnoticed and making change actually will happen. A good portion of art created by these artists happened from an incident happening, and their art is an effect of inequality incidents happening. Another goal for this blog is to focus on why the artist releases their art on certain dates, and why some of their art ends up being talked about for many years after their release.

Hi Raj, thanks for sharing your approach here. I'm impressed that you already have a direction you're interested in moving for your work this semester and think the topic of family is a great one to use! I'd be interested to know more on your initial thoughts about some of your favorite pieces, as you were to explore through your Avatar Snap! I hope you'll open that link for us so we can take a look!
