Venom Out of a Bottle
Hi reader,
Two bottles. Drinking. It is all fun and games until someone loses their life. That is one of the main reasons why I do not drink. I have lost too many people to alcohol. One of the closest people I have lost was my grandfather. Before I was even born, I was told my grandfather was an alcoholic and after I was born, he started to stop drinking. My family and I lost him about five years later with a heart related death and one of the main causes of that was alcohol and high cholesterol. This was my first experience of death, as a six year old, really hit me in my roots and the lesson of not to drink alcohol has really stuck with me. Even with other people drinking near me and having a great time doing it, either family or friends, I have never had the need to get a drink or want to get drunk to have a good time. Since I do not drink, even though I am not allowed to, I persevere past friends peer pressuring me to drink, so that I can “fit in with the crowd.”
But people can be influenced to want to drink by their friends or by different forms of art saying that drinking is perfectly fine. Songs and movies are the biggest forms of arts that showcase drinking to be “ok.” I will be focusing on the art of music impacting people to think that alcohol will positively impact them, while the more people consuming alcohol the more it negatively impacts them. The two mains songs I will be focusing on will be Empty, by Juice WRLD, and Drinkin’ problem by Midland. In his song Empty, he says that he “problem solve with Styrofoam” and the liquid inside the cup can be assumed to be alcohol. The song by Midland, one of his lines talks about people saying his drinking is a problem and he replies that it is “a solution,” and this another example of an artist letting people believe that drinking is a solution to their troubles. In both of these songs, the artist believes that alcohol is the answer to all of their problems, but in fact, harms them in a future date. The art of music makes people believe that drinking is not dangerous and is medicine for their problems, but this same ideology led one of these artists, Juice WRLD, to die from an alcohol and drug overdose.
The art of music ends up conveying to people to think that drinking has no consequences and can heal all of their problems. This leads many people, like teenagers and young adults, unknowing of the consequences of alcohol to try and abuse the substance because the music tells people that drinking is "fine" and is the norm. The true consequence of alcohol leaves people to have even more difficulties in their lives. Many people, like my grandfather, thought the liquid out of the bottle was going to allow him to be free from his problems, instead, the venom out of a bottle was one of the reasons that killed him.

I have not lost anyone due to alcohol, but I have lost a close friend due to cancer. Her name is Katelyn and she died in sixth grade. just like you, I also learned from this sad life experience. I became an active volunteer at my local children's hospital. I would participate in fundraisers, playin with the cancer patients, and providing dream room makeovers. I think that it is great that you believe so strongly in not drinking. I agree with you too, I am able to have clean fun.
ReplyDeletewow, this hit home for me. I have lost a few people in my lifetime to drunk driving. Although I was not as close to them as you must have been with your grandfather, the fact that it happens just hurts. I use to think becoming 21 would be so cool so I could drink whenever but as I grew older seeing alcohol made me sick. Just like Lenard, I started giving back to people I knew needed help with alcohol or explain to my friends that do drink why they should not go as hard.
ReplyDeleteHey, first of all I want to say I am sorry about what has happened to your loved ones due to alcohol. I think that everyone can relate to some extent how alcohol has affected someone they love and I applaud you for making the decision to not get involved with alcohol. I think that shows mental toughness and a focused mindset toward things that matter at the end of the day. Reflecting on the writing of this essay I think you did an excellent job, You did a great job grabbing my emotions, and in a good way. I do not think it is a bad thing to feel like you are making someone feel bad for you, instead I think it is great to share your healing process because that could help someone else without your knowing. I also liked your poetic style to the start of the piece which I found very unique. I think that was a great approach because I was instantly intrigued to see where that was going to go.
ReplyDeleteI loved it ! Nice blog that makes people think about reality. I am familiar with your situation, a family member had a huge addiction to alcohol, and it was not beacuse he tried to forget problems, and hide it with alcohol. I have learned more about his story and the main reason was the influence that was by people who were in higher rank than him. Therefore, in a way he was obligated indirectly to accpet drinks, otherwise it would have been a disrespectful behavior. In the long term, I have seen many problems ocurring in my family due to that person , so that in a way brought me a bad thought of alcohol. I definitely believe that there is a huge influence of that, i dont judge the people who consume alcohol, in my country it is a normal custome to have a lot of holidays were people celebrate a lot, and the drinking age is 18, so in my environment there was a lot of influence that wanted me to consume alcohol, I have tried it just for special ocassions, but I found that I don't feel comfortable drinking it everytime or in any party. The culture of each country affects too much the consuming of drugs and alcohol, so there is definitely a big influence by people who we think have a higher status than us.
